Homework

In Year 6 this half term children will receive spellings each week that they must learn at home to be tested on a Friday.

They will receive weekly homework that will link to their class work.

Children are expected to read at least three times a week but it is extremely beneficial for them to read everyday.

In recognition of their hard work and dedication for doing their homework children will be rewarded with house points and special mentions in assembly and on the weekly school newsletter.

P.E

Please ensure children have PE kits in school and any earrings are removed or plasters need to be provided for the children to cover them with.

Uniform

All children should wear full uniform.

We do allow pupils to wear all black trainers - no coloured swooshes/stripes etc. with all black soles.

Black shoes are also still acceptable and preferred for school.

What are the SATs?

  • SATs are the tests that are given to children at the end of Key Stage 2.
  • The SATs take place over four days, starting on Monday 11th May 2026 ending on Thursday 14th May 2026.

The SATs papers consist of:

  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling (paper 1: GPS) – Monday 11th May
  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling (paper 2: Spelling) – Monday 11th May
  • Reading – Tuesday 12th May
  • Maths (paper 1: Arithmetic) – Wednesday 13th May
  • Maths (paper 2: Reasoning) – Wednesday 13th May
  • Maths (paper 3: Reasoning) – Thursday 14th May

When and how the SATs are completed?

  • The tests take place during normal school hours, under exam conditions.
  • Children are not allowed to talk to each other from the moment the assessments are handed out until they are collected at the end of the test.
  • After the tests are completed, the papers are sent away to be marked externally.
  • The results are then sent to the school in July.
  • Each test lasts no longer than 60 minutes:
  • Grammar/ Punctuation – 45 minutes
  • Spelling – 15 minutes
  • Reading – 60 minutes
  • Arithmetic – 30 minutes
  • Reasoning – 40 minutes
  • Reasoning – 40 minutes

The Results

Tests are marked externally.

Once marked, the tests will be given the following scores:

raw score (total number of marks achieved for each paper);

scaled score (see below);

A judgement on if the National Standard has been met.

Scaled scores range from 80 to 120.

A scaled score of 100 or more shows the pupil is meeting the National Standard.

Leighton Hall

Year 6 don't mind a bit of rain and it certainly didn't spoil our fun at Leighton Hall on Friday.  We had a fantastic time learning about the history of British orchards and the seasonality of the food we grow in our country.  We were fascinated to learn about bees and how they - as well as other pollinators - are vital in the growth of our food.  We made our own apple juice by chopping, pulping and pressing apples from the orchard and even cooked a slice of caramelised apple over a campfire.  Delicious!

The children loved the active and creative games and tasks set by the wonderfully knowledgeable staff at Leighton Hall and they impressed all their teachers with their enthusiasm and team work.
